EditMe Blog2008-08-21
Our support staff received many complaints this afternoon from customers saying that the new editor was running slowly, sometimes crippling the browser altogether. After some investigation, we found that there was a noticeable performance degradation with pages of moderately long length, and very significant degradation with extremely long or complex pages (with 60,000+ characters). This problem was particularly acute on slower computers and in Internet Explorer. Modern computers editing normal-length web pages (like you see on this site and the Support Wiki, for example) did not experience this problem.
Though EditMe does extensive testing on all releases, we failed to test on slower computers and with extremely long pages. I apologize to all customers that were frustrated by this problem today.
As of this writing, we have deployed changes to the editor that resolve these performance issues. The new functionality has not changed; these were simply efficiencies that were not taken advantage of in the original release.
In order to get these fixes, you will need to refresh your browser while viewing the editing screen. This will be easiest if you edit a short page that wasn't terribly slow before, and then refresh using the Ctrl+F5 keyboard shortcut. Emptying your browser's cache will have the same effect, and should be used if the refresh doesn't work. If you do not notice a marked difference in performance when editing very long pages, it is likely your browser is still using the older cached files.
Some users have commented that the new editor changes the content of their pages. This was expected to a certain extent because the new editor enforces more stringent consistency on the code it allows to be saved, ultimately leading to a more consistent and reliable editing experience.
Reporting these problems: In order for us to identify the source and possibly fix these problems, we need your help. If you are getting frustrated with the new editor changing the content of your pages, please contact us through the Private Support Forum and tell us 1) the name of your EditMe site, 2) the name of the page where you experience problems, 3) what changes were made that were unwanted. This will allow support staff to review the issue and possibly present a fix.
If you are seeing blank lines being inserted on some pages of your site after editing today, this is a known issue that is caused by the more stringent restrictions of the new editor. While it requires the lines to be removed after the page is first edited, this will only need to be done once, and the result will be a more stable editing experience going forward.
Once again, I apologize for these problems and the frustration they have caused today. Thank you for your patience and continued support.
