Product Update: Editor Enhancements

Monday, June 25, 2007

A product update released today includes many enhancements and bug fixes for EditMe's browser-based editor. Notable enhancements include integrated image and link management, improved performance, a new "Media" dialog to manage multi-media content, and improved Safari and Opera support.

Here is a full list of enhancements:

  • The new Media button allows easy insertion of Flash, video and audio content. These files can now be attached to the page and inserted directly into the editor using this button. Previously, this required creating a separate included text-only page.
  • The Attachments drop-down that used to appear below the editor has been replaced with drop-downs in the Image, Link and Media dialogs. All of these dialogs now list attachments on the page as options. Additionally, the Link dialog includes a list of pages on the site. If there are more than 100 pages on the site, the 100 most recently modified pages are listed instead.
  • By consolidating and compressing the JavaScript code that makes up the editor, load time is cut by up to 75%.
  • Though still not up to par with Internet Explorer and Firefox, Safari and Opera support is now relatively stable. There is no longer a compatibility warning pop-up for Safari users.
  • Dialogs (such as Insert Link, Insert Image, etc.) are now floating layers instead of pop-up windows. This change improves performance, eases multi-window confusion, and keeps pop-up blockers interfering with the dialogs. The Full Screen mode is now particularly smooth.
  • A new Select All button selects all of the content in the editor.
  • If there's some behavior with the editor that's been bothering you, try again. This editor upgrade has been over a year in the making and dozens of bugs have been fixed.

Side Effects

This update comes a small side effect that is easily fixed:

  • You may see borders around the editor toolbar buttons. Simply refresh the page to get rid of these. If that doesn't work, empty your browser's cache. These are due to a change in how the toolbar buttons are formatted.
